We humans have a lot in common with the animals. We both need food, water and shelter. We both have the capacity to love and hate. We both live our lives avoiding pain and gravitating toward pleasures. |
| It is difficult to pinpoint a single characteristic that separates us from the other creatures. Ants and bees build their own homes. Wolves have complex social hierarchies. Cats make offerings of animal sacrifice to their owners. Chimpanzees can not only use objects as tools but can modify the tools to function more efficiently. | |
| The one thing that separates us is art. Regardless of how smart a chimpanzee may be, he has never sketched lines in the sand and seen himself in those lines. Art serves no utilitarian purpose yet we completely surround ourselves with it and embellish everything we need with it. | |
| Art makes us human. |
